Talking to the “Catherine the Great” Costume Designer About Luxe Fabrics and All That Fur …

Writer: Laurie BrookinsLaurie Brookins

If you’re hooked on watching “Catherine the Great,” the HBO miniseries starring Helen Mirren about the Russian empress, take a close look at the fur accents on the costumes in the next episode. During a fun interview with London-based costume designer Maja Meschede, she revealed that only about one percent of the fur seen on film was genuine — the rest was faux, secured from a British manufacturer that specializes in producing high-end fakes, which were then doctored via hand-painting by an artist to look even more authentic.

That’s just one of the terrific details Meschede shared during our conversation, which posted in late October on The Hollywood Reporter’s Style site. Click here to read the full story, and thanks for looking!
