For the January/February 2020 issue of Celebrated Living, the magazine for the First Class cabins of American Airlines, I spoke with Ulrik Garde Due, the president and CEO of Mark Cross, the storied accessories brand, which recently opened a Madison Avenue boutique.
Classic-film fans know this brand well: It’s name-checked in Rear Window, as Grace Kelly’s Lisa Fremont carries a Mark Cross overnight case and mentions it in what may be the first product placement ever on film. Over the years the brand, founded in 1845, has changed hands several times, but under Garde Due’s direction seems to be on a path toward sustainable modernity, with a combination of new styles, respect for its heritage (one room of the boutique is devoted to the “Grace” styles that have arisen out of that original design), and a burgeoning interest among celebrities like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, who have been carrying Mark Cross bags on the red carpet.
